I was really suprised by how good this movie actually was. This is not a glorification of Hustler magazine & pornography but instead a civics lesson in how the 1st Amendment is supposted to work & sometimes doesn't work as expected. This is a bio-pic about Larry Flynt starting with how he got the idea to start Hustler & mainly focusing on his court battles as well as his relationship with his wife, Althea (played by Courtney Love). I do need to say I did not feel that Courtney had much of a stretch here as an actress, but on the other hand she was extremely credible & believable as Althea. The movie is very funny & the pacing is excellent. Larry Flynt is not held up as an great American Icon, but more as a common guy trying to publish the sleasiest rag possible.
I highly recommend this movie as long as you are prepared to deal with the subject matter. I would not recommend this as a "family" movie. Yes, I realize that this is a highly controversial movie. Please do not email me about how could I possibly support Hustler & all it stands for. I do not support Hustler magazine or endorse it's content. What I am saying, is that this is a very good, very funny, very interesting movie which should also be used as a base for political discussions.
