For me it had been 20 years since I had seen it on the big screen & I was very curious as to how well it would hold up with age. I have to admit, very well. Not all of the added special effects were really needed, but they didn't detract either. The addition of a scene with Han Solo & Jabba the Hut definetly improved understanding the plot better later when Han is taken prisoner in "Empire Strikes Back". Jabba the Hut was improved greatly & I'm very curious to see how they will improve him in "Return Of the Jedi". I felt like the added scenes made the movie make far more sense than the first time I had seen it. By comparison, the original release version looks like the Reader's Digest version of this film.
Watching 'Star Wars" with a 20-year perspective was very interesting especially in the case of Princess Leia. Watching how this character was written shows how visionary Lucas was with his heroine. As a teenager, I remember how jarring she was (as compared with other movie heroines of the time); now she comes across as a very feminist, assertive woman. If she had been written as other heroines of that period had been, this would have dated the movie terribly. Her actions are exactly what we expect of women in 1990s.
Ok, so enough of the film school lecture. Go see "Star Wars" and the rest of the trilogy while you can on the big screen. It's far more fun than watching it on TV or VCR. Besides, it won't be around forever, and the TV & VCR versions will be.
